Summer in the Waikato is anything but quiet. From cricket at Seddon Park and waka ama on Lake Karāpiro to fishing in Raglan, motorsport in Huntly, cycling around the Coromandel and some seriously fun family festivals, the region has a packed calendar heading into summer 2026/27.
Want to get involved rather than just watch? There are plenty of chances for that too, with running, cycling, triathlon, fishing and even a world championship manu qualifier on the programme.
Ready to make some summer plans? Here are some of the events worth putting in the calendar.
Black Ferns v France
Saturday 17 October 2026, 3:05pm | FMG Stadium Waikato, Hamilton
The Black Ferns return to Hamilton in October for a WXV Global Series Test against France, kicking off at 3:05pm at FMG Stadium Waikato. It will be the first of three home Tests against France, with the following matches in Whangārei and Christchurch.
It is also the Black Ferns’ first Test in Hamilton for two years, so it is a particularly good local inclusion. Tickets are already on sale through New Zealand Rugby.
K2 Cycle Classic
Saturday 31 October 2026 | Coromandel Peninsula
Fancy starting the summer event season with one of New Zealand’s toughest cycling challenges? The K2 Cycle Classic takes riders around the spectacular Coromandel Peninsula, combining big climbs with coastal scenery, bush and farmland.
The full K2 covers 192km, but you do not have to tackle the whole thing. There are also 86km and 43km options, making the event accessible to riders looking for something slightly less epic.
The main event starts and finishes in Coromandel Town, while the shorter distances have separate starting points around the peninsula. It is a serious ride, but the scenery should provide plenty of distraction when the legs start complaining.
BLACKCAPS v India T20 International
Sunday 1 November 2026 | Seddon Park, Hamilton
International cricket is arriving early this summer. The BLACKCAPS take on India at Seddon Park in the first of two Hamilton fixtures during India’s 2026 tour of New Zealand.
This one is a T20 International, so expect a fast-paced evening of big shots, quick wickets and plenty of noise from the crowd. India matches tend to bring an especially lively atmosphere to Seddon Park, making this one of the standout sporting dates on Hamilton’s spring and summer calendar.
Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic
6 to 8 November 2026 | Waikato River, Hamilton
If you have never watched competitive water ski racing before, this could be the weekend to change that. The Bridge to Bridge returns to Hamilton from 6 to 8 November as part of the New Zealand Water Ski Racing Association’s 2026/27 season.
Water ski racing is considerably faster and louder than a relaxed afternoon behind the family boat, with competitors racing at speed along the Waikato River. Spectators are welcome at New Zealand Water Ski Racing Association events, so keep an eye on the organiser’s programme for viewing locations and race times closer to the weekend.
Round the Bridges
Sunday 15 November 2026, 10am | Garden Place, Hamilton
Hamilton’s classic running event returns on 15 November. Round the Bridges offers both 6km and 12km courses, with participants able to race, jog or walk their way around the city. Both events start at 10am from central Hamilton, with the longer course following the Waikato River, crossing Fairfield Bridge and passing through Hamilton Gardens before returning towards the CBD.
There is also a Kids Challenge, making this one of the easier sporting events to turn into a whole-family outing. Whether you are chasing a time or simply fancy a Sunday morning walk with a few thousand other people, Round the Bridges is a Hamilton tradition worth experiencing.
Waikato TQ Midget Championship
Saturday 5 December 2026, racing from 6pm | Huntly Speedway, Huntly
Want your summer sport with a little more noise? Huntly Speedway hosts the Waikato TQ Midget Championship on 5 December, with the public gates opening ahead of racing at 6pm.
The evening also includes other classes on the programme, giving spectators a full night of speedway action. Huntly has a packed schedule throughout summer, so even if you cannot make this meeting, there are plenty of other chances to experience a night at the track.
Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon
Sunday 6 December 2026 | Cambridge
Got a young swimmer, cyclist or runner in the family? The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon returns to Cambridge on 6 December, giving Kiwi kids the chance to swim, cycle and run their way around an event designed especially for them.
It is much more about giving it a go than producing elite-level race times, which makes it a great introduction to multisport. Cambridge is one of the confirmed locations on the 2026/27 TRYathlon calendar.
Northern Districts Women v Wellington Blaze
Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2026 | Seddon Park, Hamilton
There is top-level women’s cricket at Seddon Park just before Christmas, with defending Hallyburton Johnstone Shield champions Northern Districts hosting the Wellington Blaze on consecutive days.
Northern Districts made history last season by winning their first national women’s domestic title, so this is a good chance to see the champions back on home turf.
Both matches are part of New Zealand’s national women’s one-day competition and will also be streamed by New Zealand Cricket. Match start times are still to be confirmed.
Coromandel Keltic Fair
Saturday 2 January 2027, 9am to 4pm | Coromandel Town
Need a reason to leave the beach for a few hours? The Keltic Fair is one of the Coromandel’s big summer holiday traditions, bringing more than 300 stalls to town alongside food, entertainment and children’s rides.
It attracts thousands of visitors and has become a fixture of the Coromandel holiday season. At just $2 entry for anyone over five, it is also a refreshingly affordable family day out. Go hungry, wear a hat and allow yourself plenty of time to wander.
Waka Ama Sprint Nationals
17 to 23 January 2027 | Lake Karāpiro
January brings one of Lake Karāpiro’s most exciting events. The Waka Ama Sprint Nationals run for an entire week, with paddlers competing across numerous age groups and race categories.
The lake comes alive with waka, crews, supporters and racing throughout the week, creating an atmosphere that is well worth experiencing even if you are not competing yourself. With racing confirmed from 17 to 23 January, there are plenty of chances to make a day trip out of it.
Soundsplash
22 to 24 January 2027 | Wainui Reserve, Raglan
Summer in Raglan already has plenty going for it, but Soundsplash adds an entire weekend of music, art and festival atmosphere.
The all-ages festival returns to Wainui Reserve from 22 to 24 January with musicians, DJs, artists, food and camping. If spending a weekend near the beach listening to live music sounds like your kind of summer, this deserves a spot in the diary.
Manu Bay Fishing Contest
Sunday 31 January 2027 | Raglan
Rather be out on the water yourself? The Raglan Sport Fishing Club’s Manu Bay Fishing Contest is scheduled for Auckland Anniversary weekend on Sunday 31 January, with 6 February set aside as the reserve date.
The club runs a number of competitions through the season, making Raglan a great summer base for anyone who would rather be fishing than sitting on the sand.
Kāwhia Kai Festival

Keep an eye out for the return of one of the western Waikato’s most distinctive summer events. The annual Kāwhia Kai Festival celebrates Māori kai and culture alongside carving, weaving, kapa haka and community entertainment.
It is also designed as a family event and an opportunity for local marae, schools and organisations to fundraise. The festival is an established annual event, but a 2027 date has not yet been published. Once it is confirmed, this is one I would definitely add to the summer road-trip calendar.
BLACKCAPS v Sri Lanka Test
12 to 16 February 2027 | Seddon Park, Hamilton
If you prefer your cricket at a more leisurely pace, February brings Test cricket back to Hamilton. The BLACKCAPS host Sri Lanka at Seddon Park from 12 to 16 February.
Pick a day, find a shady spot and settle in. Test cricket at Seddon Park is a very different experience from a packed T20, but that relaxed atmosphere is exactly why plenty of fans love it.
Waikato Rodeo
Saturday 20 February 2027 | Kihikihi Domain, Kihikihi
For an event that feels distinctly rural Waikato, head to Kihikihi. The Waikato Rodeo is confirmed for 20 February at Kihikihi Domain, just south of Te Awamutu.
Expect a full programme of rodeo action and a very different sporting atmosphere from anything you will find at a stadium or race track. If you have never been to a rodeo before, this is one of the region’s long-running summer sporting traditions.
Aeroflow Summernats NZ
26 to 28 February 2027 | Mystery Creek, Hamilton
Mystery Creek is getting loud in February. Aeroflow Summernats NZ arrives for three days of burnouts, show cars, cruising, drag racing, music and camping.
Tickets and vehicle entries are already on sale, and with so much packed into the weekend, this looks set to become one of the region’s biggest new motorsport events. If you like cars, horsepower or simply watching somebody turn an alarming quantity of tyre into smoke, this one has your name on it.
Z Manu World Champs Hamilton Super Qualifier

Think you have the perfect manu? Time to prove it.
Hamilton hosts a Z Manu World Champs Super Qualifier at Waterworld on 27 February, giving local competitors the chance to launch themselves into the pool and try to qualify for the big stage.
It is a gloriously Kiwi addition to the sporting calendar and just as entertaining for spectators as it is for the people making the splash. The goal is simple: go big.
A Day at the Domain
Sunday 28 February 2027, 10am to 2pm | Te Aroha Domain, Te Aroha
A Day at the Domain is turning 50, and that sounds like an excellent excuse for a celebration. The free family event returns to the beautiful Te Aroha Domain with local makers and craft stalls, food, entertainment and activities for children.
The 2027 event marks its 50th anniversary, so organisers are also promising a few extra touches for the occasion. Pack some chairs or a picnic and enjoy an easy Sunday outing beneath Te Aroha.
Make a Summer of It
The best thing about a Waikato summer is just how much variety you can squeeze into one region.
One weekend you could be watching cricket in Hamilton. The next you might be listening to live music in Raglan, watching waka ama at Karāpiro, wandering around a festival in Coromandel or heading south for water ski racing in Mangakino.
And you do not have to wait for an organised event to get outside.
Surf at Raglan, ride a section of Te Awa River Ride, climb the Hakarimata stairs, head underground at Waitomo, explore Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari or spend a day discovering the beaches and walking tracks of the Coromandel.
Whether your perfect summer involves running shoes, race cars, fishing rods, surfboards or simply a picnic rug and somewhere interesting to go, there is plenty happening around the Waikato in 2026/27.
