Christmas is coming, and Hamilton and the wider Waikato are getting ready to turn up the festive cheer.
From giant Christmas trees and colourful parades to twilight markets, dazzling lights, carols, handmade gifts and even Christmas in the Shire, there is plenty to get the whole family into the spirit of the season.
Some 2026 event programmes are already locked in, while a few of our favourite annual traditions are still waiting on their final dates. We have clearly marked those below so you know what is confirmed and what to keep an eye out for as December gets closer.
Here is what is happening around Hamilton and the Waikato for Christmas 2026.
Cambridge Christmas Festival
27 November to 12 December 2026 | Cambridge Town Hall | Free entry
The annual Cambridge Christmas Festival returns to Cambridge Town Hall from 27 November to 12 December, bringing plenty of festive charm to town.
Browse Christmas decorations and preserves, stop for something at the café and enjoy live concerts while you soak up the atmosphere. It is free to enter and an easy addition to a Christmas shopping trip or family day out in Cambridge.
SkyCity Christmas Tree Lighting Festival
Saturday 28 November 2026, 5pm to 9pm | Garden Place, Hamilton
Hamilton’s giant Christmas tree is back! Standing around 27 metres high to the tip of its star, the Garden Place tree is one of Hamilton’s most recognisable Christmas traditions.
This year’s SkyCity Christmas Tree Lighting Festival takes place on Saturday 28 November from 5pm to 9pm, with a festive evening building up to the moment the lights come on. Bring the family, find a spot in Garden Place and watch the city officially light up for Christmas.
Post a Letter to Santa in Garden Place

If somebody in your household has a very important message for the North Pole, keep an eye out for Santa’s special mailbox in Garden Place.
Hamilton Christmas Charitable Trust traditionally brings festive activities to the central city alongside the giant Christmas tree, making this an easy little activity to combine with an evening trip to see the lights.
Merry Minis in Morrinsville

Morrinsville is adding something wonderfully creative to Christmas this year. Merry Minis in Morrinsville invites families, schools, businesses and community groups to create miniature Christmas trees, with the finished creations displayed together at Morrinsville Gallery.
The exhibition will be open throughout December, with a celebration opening on 1 December. It also coincides with the return of the gallery’s Mini Christmas Lights display, featuring tiny festive village scenes collected from around the world. If you fancy a Christmas outing with a little more creativity and a little less shopping, this one is worth a visit.
St Stephen’s Tamahere Christmas Festival
From 1 December 2026 | St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Tamahere
St Stephen’s Christmas Festival is one of those lovely local traditions that feels made for December. Throughout the year, the church’s craft groups create handmade decorations and gifts for the festival, with proceeds supporting local charities.
Recent festivals have also included choirs, performers, tea rooms and plenty of Christmas atmosphere. St Stephen’s currently says its Christmas Festival begins on 1 December, although the detailed 2026 performance calendar has not yet been released.
Tamahere Christmas Twilight Market
Saturday 5 December 2026, 4pm to 8pm | Tamahere
Not finished shopping after the morning markets? Head out to Tamahere for an evening browse. The Tamahere Country Market is holding its Christmas Twilight Market on Saturday 5 December from 4pm to 8pm.
Expect the usual mix of local produce, art, jewellery, woodwork, food and handmade goods, all with a little extra festive atmosphere as the sun starts to go down. The market sits alongside the wider St Stephen’s Christmas Festival, making Tamahere a particularly good place to spend a December afternoon and evening.
Waikato Christmas Market
Saturday 5 December 2026, 9am to 3pm | The Barn, Claudelands Events Centre
Still have a Christmas shopping list that needs some attention? The Waikato Christmas Market returns to Claudelands with more than 190 stallholders bringing together handmade products, artisan gifts, food and plenty of festive treats.
Children can visit Santa’s Workshop, and pony rides are also planned. Entry is $5 at the gate, children under 12 are free, and parking is free through Gate 3 on Brooklyn Road. It is an easy way to knock a few names off the gift list while supporting makers and small businesses.
Extravaganza in the Park Christmas Market
Saturday 5 December 2026, 9am to 2pm | Elliott Park, Nawton | Free entry
If you like your Christmas markets big, colourful and full of things for the kids, Extravaganza in the Park is another one to watch. The annual Nawton event brings together a huge range of market stalls and food alongside live entertainment, pony rides, face painting, children’s activities and giveaways.
A current event listing has the 2026 market scheduled for Saturday 5 December from 9am to 2pm. Because the Hamilton City Council’s full December programme has not yet been published, it is worth checking the final event details closer to the day.
Hamilton Christmas Parade
Sunday 6 December 2026, 2pm | Anglesea Street, Hamilton Central
For plenty of Hamilton families, this is the big one. The First Credit Union Christmas Parade returns on Sunday 6 December, with around 80 to 90 floats expected to travel through the central city. Expect marching bands, dancers, colourful characters, giant balloons, community groups and, naturally, Santa Claus.
The parade starts at 2pm and travels along Anglesea Street. Get there early enough to find a good viewing spot, and do not forget the sunscreen, hats and water. A December afternoon in Hamilton can get very warm.
Riverbank Lane Christmas Market

Riverbank Lane already has plenty of character, and its Christmas Market adds even more life to this little corner of the city. Events include pop-up stalls, festive food, children’s activities and live gospel choir performances.
The 2026 programme has not yet been announced. Keep an eye out for this one if you prefer your Christmas markets a little smaller and more intimate.
Cambridge Christmas Parade

Cambridge knows how to put on a Christmas parade. The town’s 2025 event filled the streets with floats, costumes, community groups and plenty of festive creativity, and the parade has become a popular part of the local Christmas calendar.
Waipā District Council has not yet published the 2026 parade date, so check back closer to December for this year’s programme.
Te Awamutu Christmas Parade

Another Waikato Christmas tradition worth a short road trip is the Te Awamutu Christmas Parade. Alexandra Street comes alive with floats, community groups, music and families lining the route.
The Rotary-supported parade returned again in 2025, but the 2026 date has not yet been released. If you are based south of Hamilton, this is one to keep on your festive radar.
Christmas at the Lake

Pack a picnic blanket and head for the lake. Christmas at the Lake has become one of Hamilton’s big community Christmas celebrations, bringing music, dance, food, children’s activities and Santa together beside Hamilton Lake. Recent events have featured multiple dance and music groups, face painting, rides and food stalls.
A current 2026 event listing gives Saturday 12 December from 5:30pm to 9:45pm, but the organiser has not yet published the date on its own main website, so treat that timing as provisional for now. Once officially confirmed, this will be one of the big family dates to circle.
Hamilton Civic Choir: Kia Tipu o Ngaa Waiata

Hamilton Civic Choir is closing its 80th anniversary season with an appropriately festive programme. Kia Tipu o Ngaa Waiata: Let the Songs Flourish will feature Part One of Handel’s Messiah alongside Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël, bringing two beautiful works of sacred and Christmas music to the Waikato.
The concert is confirmed for Saturday 12 December, with the venue, start time and ticket details still to be announced. For anyone who loves live choral music, this will be a lovely addition to the December calendar.
Morrinsville Christmas Parade

Fancy heading out of Hamilton for some small-town Christmas fun? Morrinsville’s annual Christmas Parade brings colourful floats, community groups, costumes and Santa into the heart of town.
The parade is one of Morrinsville’s major community Christmas traditions. The 2026 date has not yet been released, so keep an eye on the Morrinsville events calendar as December approaches.
Christmas in the Park, Morrinsville

Do not rush home as soon as the Morrinsville parade finishes. Christmas in the Park has recently followed the parade, turning the event into a much bigger afternoon and evening celebration.
It is a good option if you want to make a full day of your trip to Morrinsville rather than heading over just for the floats. The 2026 programme is still to come.
Trees at The Meteor

Not every Christmas tree has to be green, symmetrical or covered in tinsel. Trees at The Meteor brings a much more creative spin to the traditional Christmas tree, with artists and community members producing inventive interpretations using all sorts of materials.
The event’s “Compassion not Consumption” kaupapa encourages creativity, recycling and sustainability rather than simply buying more Christmas stuff. Trees is confirmed to return in 2026, with the detailed December timetable still to be finalised. If you like your Christmas activities a little quirky, creative and unexpected, put this one on the list.
Temple View Christmas Lights

For generations of Hamilton families, a trip to the Temple View Christmas Lights has been part of the festive season. Thousands of lights transform the grounds around the Hamilton New Zealand Temple and Legacy Park after dark, creating one of the city’s most recognisable Christmas displays.
The lights have been a Hamilton Christmas tradition for around 40 years, and recent programmes have also featured local choirs performing Christmas music in the evenings. Based on just how long this tradition has been part of Christmas in Hamilton, it is certainly worth keeping a December evening free for it.
A Hobbiton Christmas
Friday 18 and Saturday 19 December 2026 | Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata
If your idea of Christmas needs more Hobbits, feasting and second helpings, this might be the one. A Hobbiton Christmas returns for two special evenings on 18 and 19 December.
The experience begins with a guided dusk tour through the Movie Set before heading to The Green Dragon Inn and Bywater Marketplace for festive drinks, live entertainment and a Christmas buffet dinner. The evening finishes with a moonlit journey back through the Shire.
This is definitely at the premium end of the Christmas calendar, with adult tickets currently priced at $300, but it is also one of the region’s most unusual festive experiences. Tickets are limited, so this is not one to leave until Christmas week.
Xmas Eve at Cambridge Raceway

Want to do something completely different on Christmas Eve? Xmas Eve at the Raceway is a Cambridge tradition, combining harness racing with a relaxed family afternoon before Santa gets rather busy for the evening.
Previous programmes have included lawn games, face painting and a last-minute visit from Santa, with families setting themselves up on the lawn to watch the racing. Christmas Eve falls on Thursday 24 December in 2026. Cambridge Raceway has not yet updated its event page with the 2026 racing timetable, so gate times and race times should be checked closer to the date.
Make This Christmas Your Own
You do not have to squeeze every event into one frantic December. Pick a parade. Wander around a market. Take the kids to see the lights. Sing a few carols. Head out of town for an afternoon, or simply wander through Garden Place one evening when the giant tree is glowing.
With Christmas events stretching from late November right through to Christmas Eve, there are plenty of chances to start a new tradition or revisit an old favourite.
